You can safely check your insulation depth with a ruler and a flashlight. Look for the product label on any exposed bags in the attic, and photograph the depth at three points for reference. What you shouldn’t do: disturb vermiculite or pre-1990 insulation without testing (asbestos risk), walk through a ceiling, or blow new material over an unsealed floor. Seal the bypasses first. Insulation over air leaks is just expensive noise reduction.

The actual install requires a commercial blowing machine, proper PPE for fiberglass handling, and - more importantly - the discipline to seal before you insulate.
